Hacks star Hannah Einbinder won her first Emmy at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, taking home the award for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series — and used the moment to make one of the night’s rare political statements. Closing her acceptance speech, Einbinder said: “Go Birds, f**k ICE and free Palestine.”

Einbinder’s remarks followed a week of debate in Hollywood over a pledge signed by nearly 4,000 industry figures, including herself, promising not to work with Israeli film companies or institutions they consider complicit in “genocide and apartheid.” Paramount, parent company of CBS, which broadcast this year’s ceremony, publicly rejected the boycott, saying it does not support “silencing individual creative artists based on their nationality.”
During her speech, Einbinder also reflected on her years of nominations without a win. “I was just really committed to the personal narrative that it was actually cooler to continue to lose,” she joked, before adding, “but this is cool too! This is also punk rock.” She thanked Hacks creators Jen Statsky, Paul W. Downs and Lucia Aniello “for changing my life in every conceivable way,” and praised co-star Jean Smart, calling her “like a sun, and I just get to stand in her warmth.”
Backstage, Einbinder elaborated on her political message. “I thought it was important to talk about Palestine because it’s an issue that’s very dear to my heart,” she told reporters. Citing friends working as doctors in Gaza, she said, “Boycotting is an effective tool to create pressure on the powers that be. The boycott does not target individuals, only institutions complicit in the genocide.”

This also comes after Javier Bardem used his appearance at the ceremony to make a political statement, wearing a keffiyeh on the red carpet and voicing support for Film Workers for Palestine.
Einbinder plays Ava Daniels on Hacks, which premiered its fourth season earlier this year on HBO Max.
