Dua Lipa sues Samsung, claims company used her face to sell TVs without permission

Dua Lipa has filed a $15 million lawsuit against Samsung, accusing the tech giant of using her likeness on television packaging without authorisation or compensation.

According to the complaint filed in California federal court, Samsung allegedly began placing Lipa’s image on TV boxes last year as part of a large-scale retail marketing campaign. The singer claims she was never approached for approval and did not endorse the products in any capacity, according to reports from Variety.

The lawsuit states that Lipa later demanded the company stop using the image, but alleges Samsung responded dismissively and continued the campaign. The filing argues that the unauthorised use created the false impression that the pop star had partnered with or officially supported the brand.

“Ms. Lipa’s face was prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without consideration, and as to which she had no say, control, or input whatsoever,” the complaint states.

The image at the centre of the dispute was reportedly taken backstage during the Austin City Limits Festival in 2024. Lipa claims ownership of the photograph’s copyright and argues the company had no legal right to reproduce it commercially.

The filing also includes social media posts from consumers who allegedly purchased Samsung televisions because of Lipa’s image appearing on the packaging.

The lawsuit alleges copyright infringement, trademark violations, false endorsement under the Lanham Act and breach of California publicity rights laws.

Lipa’s legal team argues that the singer maintains a carefully curated public image and selectively chooses endorsement deals, making the alleged unauthorised campaign especially damaging to her brand.
