Body switch? Family takes wrong remains for cremation after mortuary mix-up at Pune private hospital; case registered

PUNE: The Koregaon Park police on Saturday registered a case against the administrator and other staffers posted at the mortuary of a private hospital on Bund Garden Road over charges of “violating the dignity of the dead”. Senior inspector Vijayraj Doke of the Koregaon Park police confirmed, “We have registered the case and further probe is on.” Charges applied are under sections 301 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Yash Bhagat (27) of Baramati, the relative of a deceased 57-year-old woman, lodged a complaint in this regard with the police. According to the first information report (FIR), the woman had been admitted to the hospital for treatment and died on Jan 19. After her demise, relatives decided to shift her body to the mortuary. Later that night, the family reached the mortuary to claim the body. However, the hospital’s mortuary staffers handed over another body to the relatives without checking the tag number attached. The family, unaware of this exchange, took the body for cremation and there, discovered that it was someone else’s mortal remains. They then reached the hospital once again with the stranger’s corpse and demanded the body of their deceased relative. This is when it was revealed to hospital staff that the bodies had been switched. “The mortuary staffers then called up a few officials, after which the body of the said family’s deceased relative was handed over to her kin,” another police officer said.
