Only light rain expected today as city sends off Bappa

Pune: The Ganapati immersion procession in the city is unlikely to face major weather disruptions, though the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Konkan and the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on Saturday, the final visarjan day. The city, however, is expected to see only very light to light rain under generally cloudy skies.Rainfall activity in the ghats has been on the lower side over the last two days compared to earlier intense spells. On Thursday , Lonavla received the most rainfall among the ghat areas with 60mm, followed by Koyna (54mm), Bhira (41mm), Dongarwadi (35mm) and Tamhini (35mm). On Friday, showers picked up at some stations, with Bhira registering the most rainfall at 84mm. Tamhini received 75mm of rainfall, followed by Dongarwadi (63mm), Davdi (58mm), Shirgaon (52mm) and Khopoli (45mm). Most other ghat stations reported between 5mm and 40mm, which is light to moderate rainfall. The IMD’s regional forecast map for Saturday indicates widespread rainfall over South Konkan and Goa, fairly widespread rainfall over North Konkan and North Madhya Maharashtra, and scattered rainfall across South Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, West Vidarbha and East Vidarbha.Officials said that while devotees in the city can expect only intermittent light showers during visarjan, those travelling towards the ghats and Konkan region should remain cautious in view of the heavy rain alert.
