Roi Roi Binale, Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg’s final film, broke all opening-day records with pre-dawn shows in many screens across Assam on Friday(October 31, 2025).

An emotional wave swept the State as late singer-composer-actor’s fans, who had booked the first day tickets a week ago, thronged single-screen and multiplex theatres before dawn for the first show at 4:25 a.m. The trend continued till the day’s last show at 10.25 p.m.

“For the first time in the history of Assamese films, the film was released in more than 25 cities, including faraway Vapi in Gujarat, Indore, Raipur, Visakhapatnam, and Vellore. It is being shown in 17 theatres in Bengaluru compared to one or two for Assamese movies earlier,” the film’s distributor, Siddharth Goenka, said on Friday (October 31, 2025).

“There will be an unprecedented 600 shows daily across 91 screens in Assam and elsewhere in the northeastern region. Outside the northeast, 96 halls are screening the movie with 170 shows daily,” he said.

Roi Roi Binale is a musical love story set against the backdrop of a region recovering from the scars of insurgency. The late Garg, who plays the lead role of a blind artist in the 147-minute film, was the producer of the film along with his wife, Garima Saikia Garg and Shyamantak Gautam

“Making a soft romantic film filled with songs was Zubeen da’s dream for almost two decades. He was prophetic about the film breaking all records. We are happy that his words have come true, but sad that he isn’t around to experience the feeling,” the film’s director Rajesh Bhuyan said.

Garg died in Singapore while swimming off an island on September 19, 2025. He was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival there.

Seven people, including the festival’s organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and the late singer-actor’s manager Siddharth Sharma, were arrested in connection with his death.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he was grateful to Garg’s fans and movie lovers for putting Roi Roi Binale on the path of cinematic history in Assam. He said that he would host a private show to watch the movie instead of attending a public show.

“If I go to a cinema hall, security and logistical concerns will cause inconvenience for the people. The theatres are exclusively screening Garg’s posthumous magnum opus to let the people pay tribute to their icon,” he said.

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), one of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s two regional allies, booked all 218 seats for a show at a multiplex in Guwahati for the party leaders and workers.

AGP Misters Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta were among those who watched the film screened at 11 a.m. “The film tugged at the heartstrings, more because Zubeen is no longer among us,” Mr Bora said.
