Pune: A woman (45), who suffered from schizophrenia, died by hanging herself from a window at the Pune regional mental hospital around 11am on Wednesday.Dr Srinivas Kolod, medical superintendent at the hospital, on Friday said, “The woman was a patient with schizophrenia and her behaviour was very aggressive. The patient, who originally hailed from Haryana, was referred to our hospital on July 31 from Parbhani’s district hospital due to her uncontrollable disorder. After her death, her post-mortem was done at Sassoon General Hospital on Friday and the body was handed over to her husband.”He said, “When she came to us, she was very aggressive and tried to hurt herself and our staffers on multiple occasions. We tried electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and antipsychotic drugs like Haloperidol as well. We even isolated her as her aggressive behaviour grew extreme.”“On the day of the incident, she had her breakfast and tea and was stable. A little later, she became aggressive and unstable. She tore her clothes, formed a rope out of them and hung herself from her room window. Even before the staffers could react, she died,” he said.“We, however, have taken cognisance of the incident and we will issue a show cause notice to all the caretakers and those who were in charge at the time,” he added.Senior inspector of the Yerawada police Ravindra Shinde said a case of accidental death was registered and an inquiry has been launched to determine the probable cause of her death.
