Why drop Nehru’s name from Metro stn? Cong asks BJP

Mumbai: Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the final phase of the Mumbai Metro Line-3, it has run into a controversy. The Mumbai Congress has slammed the ruling BJP for “deliberately not naming the Science Centre Metro station on Line 3 after the first PM Jawaharlal Nehru”.In a post on X on Monday, city Congress’ chief spokesperson, Sachin Sawant, said: “Because the BJP suffers from an allergy to the name Nehru,” they have deliberately omitted it and named the Metro station merely as Science Centre.” “The entire country knows that the area in Worli (where the Metro station is located) is identified by the name Nehru Science Centre,” he added. Mumbai Metro told TOI: “The Gazette published in Sept 2013 by the then govt has the name as Science Museum. As the actual name of the building was ‘Science Centre’, the name was confirmed.”Recalling how names of institutions named after Nehru have been changed earlier, Sawant said: “They earlier changed the name of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in Delhi to Prime Ministers’ Museum, and replaced Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) with My Bharat.”Former professor at IIT Bombay and historian Ram Puniyani said: “I am shocked but not surprised as RSS and the BJP have been opposed to Nehru because of his rational and scientific temperament. ”
