Two sisters killed after truck hits scooter in Kalewadi

Pune: Two sisters were killed after a truck hit their scooter near Dhanagar Baba temple in Kalewadi on Wednesday afternoon.The Pimpri Chinchwad police identified the deceased siblings as Rutuja Pandurang Shinde (24) and Neha (20), both from Punawale. The police took the truck driver into custody. He is from Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh.

Senior inspector Rajendra Bahirat of the Kalewadi police said the accident occurred around 1.15pm when the sisters were going from Tapkir Chowk towards Kalewadi Phata. When they reached near the temple at Rahatani Chowk, a truck dashed their scooter.“Both of them fell off the scooter under the impact of the dash and came under the wheels of the truck. The sisters died because of head injuries,” Bahirat said.The officer said prima facie investigations revealed that the truck transported vegetables from Nagpur to Pimpri. The accident occurred when it was heading towards Kalewadi after unloading the vegetables, the officer said.Bahirat said Rutuja had completed her law degree. Her younger sister, Neha, was pursuing her studies.Sumit Dhage, a resident of Punawale, told TOI that the sisters had gone out shopping when the accident occurred. “Movement of heavy vehicles in our area in the daytime is repeatedly proving to be fatal. To prevent further accidents, strict implementation of restrictions on heavy vehicles during the daytime is necessary,” Dhage said.(With inputs from Alim Shaikh)
