Trio attacks elderly couple, steals jewellery worth 2L

Pune: Three men in the early hours of Tuesday barged into a 75-year-old farmer’s house at Deulgaonraje village near Daund, about 70km from Pune. They attacked him and his wife, aged 70, with an iron rod while the couple was sleeping and took away the wife’s gold jewellery worth Rs1.90 lakh. The farmer and his wife sustained injuries near their right ears. They are out of danger, Daund police said.An officer from the Daund police told TOI that the farmer, Popat Awchar, and his wife staying in Deulgaonraje village have two sons settled in Pune. “According to the complainant, around 12am on Tuesday, he woke up after someone hit him with an iron rod near his right ear. The farmer told us that he saw his wife was already awake and was bleeding near her right ear,” the officer said.He said that when the farmer gained his senses, he saw three unknown men inside their house. One of them was carrying an iron rod. His accomplice sat on the farmer’s chest and threatened to kill him if he tried to raise an alarm. “The trio then forced the farmer’s wife to remove her gold jewellery. They also took Rs5,000 and a gold chain from the farmer’s cupboard, all collectively worth Rs 1.90 lakh. After the trio left, the farmer called his nephew and informed him about the incident,” he said.The officer said that his nephew alerted the police and took the farmer and his wife to a nearby hospital. “The farmer has given a detailed description of the trio. We have registered a case of robbery and began the investigations,” the officer said.
