76-year-old Ghazipur flower mandi worker killed after SUV skids on NH-24 service road in Delhi

NEW DELHI: A 76-year-old man was killed after a black SUV allegedly skidded and hit him on the service road of NH-24 in east Delhi’s Ghazipur village on Saturday morning.The deceased, identified as Paik Karmai, was a resident of Ghazipur village and worked at the Ghazipur flower mandi. A native of West Bengal, he was on his way to work with two co-workers when the incident took place.Police said a PCR call about a fatal accident was received around 6 am. The crash occurred near a petrol pump on the NH-24 service road. On reaching the spot, officers found the SUV in a damaged condition and Karmai lying on the road.Preliminary inquiry revealed that the SUV had allegedly struck the divider and skidded between the main carriageway and the service road before hitting the pedestrian.The driver of the SUV was identified as Shrey Kumar, a 26-year-old advocate from Noida in Uttar Pradesh. He was reportedly out on a drive with female friends when the incident occurred. He was apprehended at the spot, while the other occupants of the vehicle reportedly fled.Police added that Kumar’s blood samples have been sent for forensic examination. The body has been shifted to the LBS mortuary for post-mortem. A case is being registered at the Patparganj Industrial Area police station and further investigation is underway to ascertain the sequence of events.
