BJP to Thane Municipal Corporation: Halt new construction projects amid water scarcity

Thane: With water scarcity worsening in enclaves along the Ghodbunder Highway, BJP has now urged the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) to immediately halt permissions for new construction projects in the area.In a letter to municipal commissioner Saurabh Rao, senior BJP corporator Manohar Dumbare from ward number 2 warned that growing public anger over the water crisis could soon erupt if urgent measures were not taken. The TMC draws nearly 585 MLD of water from various sources but still finds it difficult to supply it to over 25 lakh residents. According to Dumbare, almost every building in the area struggled with inadequate water supply, forcing residents to rely heavily on private water tankers. In several large housing complexes, monthly tanker bills reportedly ran into lakhs of rupees. “It is unfortunate that regular water charges are being collected even as residents are compelled to buy tanker water,” he said. Repeated follow-ups with civic officials yielded little result, he claimed. While the administration promised an additional 50 million litres of water and then 100 million litres, these assurances did not translate into relief. Alarmingly, the crisis deepened even before the onset of summer, with the monsoon still three months away.
