The last solar eclipse of 2025 is set to occur on September 21 and coincides with Pitru Amavasya. On Pitru Amavasya, rituals such as Shradh, Tarpan, Brahmin Bhoj, and charity are performed for the peace of ancestors’ souls.
Traditionally, no auspicious work is carried out during solar or lunar eclipses. Rituals like bathing, donations, and prayers are usually conducted after the eclipse to avoid its potential negative effects. During an eclipse, negativity in the environment increases, impacting people’s mental state and overall well-being.
The importance of charitable acts is considered even greater when a solar eclipse occurs on Pitru Amavasya. Ujjain-based astrologer Anand Bhardwaj provides details on the timing of the eclipse and its visibility in India.
The solar eclipse will be visible in regions including Australia, Antarctica, Africa, the Indian Ocean, South Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Southern Ocean, Polynesia, Melanesia, and parts of Asia. Cities such as Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington in New Zealand, and Kingston on Norfolk Island will also witness the eclipse.
In India, this eclipse will appear as a partial one. According to Indian Standard Time, it will begin at 10:59 pm on September 21 and last until approximately 3:23 am. However, the eclipse will not be visible in India. Consequently, the rules of Sutak Kaal, which restrict certain activities during an eclipse, will not apply.
Devotees will be able to perform Puja and Paath on Ashwin Amavasya without any restrictions. The solar eclipse on this day will have no adverse effect in India, allowing normal worship, fasting, and other rituals to continue.
Astrologers advise, however, that pregnant women take extra precautions against the sun’s rays during this time, even though the eclipse itself will not be visible locally.
