SIR sparks war of words

New Delhi: A day after the Delhi chief electoral officer said the preparation for the special intensive revision (SIR) of the voters’ list in the city had begun, Delhi BJP welcomed the move on Thursday. In the past two decades, the party had made every effort to cleanse the list, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva claimed. He alleged that in the past 20 years, Congress and AAP had been involved in creating fake voters. “BJP will continue to make every effort to ensure that… no fake names or infiltrators are on the list,” Sachdeva asserted. AAP said that in Dec 2024, Arvind Kejriwal had exposed large-scale deletion of voters in Delhi through fraudulent means, but it was not investigated. “When EC summoned those who applied for vote deletions, only 11 people turned up, and even they denied ever filing such applications,” it claimed. Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav said BJP was preparing the ground to delete or add names to strengthen its vote base. The process has started by appointing booth-level officials in all 70 assembly constituencies and training officials.
