New Delhi: The Ramlilas in the city are always traditional. Yet they also embrace modernity every year. This year, they are stepping into the era of artificial intelligence, harnessing the technology of neural networks to craft sharper visuals, immersive soundscapes and breathtaking special effects designed to leave audiences spellbound. At landmark venues across the city — most notably the sprawling Red Fort grounds, home to some of Delhi’s grandest Ramlilas — vast stages are rising like temporary palaces. Electricians climb the scaffolds, stringing rows of lights, while painters fill the air with the sharp scent of fresh paint. Behind the scenes, actors, many of them stars in their own right, prepare to step into the roles of Ramayana characters, ready to travel through the time warp to bring the ancient drama of good triumphing over evil to the 21st century. This year, the Luv Kush Ramlila Committee, while showcasing the bravery and valour of the Army, Navy and Air Force in admiration of Operation Sindoor, will see unique initiatives. A team of artists and technical experts from Gujarat, Kashi, Rajasthan and Mathura-Vrindavan has been working for over a month to create a special three-storey Somnath Temple set. “Using 3D effects and AI technology, certain scenes are designed to make viewers feel as if they are seated inside the Somnath Temple, witnessing Lord Ram’s sacred Leela firsthand. The top floor will showcase celestial scenes with devgan showering flowers,” revealed organising committee president Arjun Kumar. While actor, singer and MP Manoj Tiwari is set to portray Lord Parshuram, this year’s celebrations will also feature a mega health camp, a grand community feast, distribution of school bags and stationery to children, saris to women and motorised tricycles and wheelchairs for people with disabilities.Meanwhile, the Shri Dharmic Leela Committee is aiming for its most spectacular Ramlila ever. According to Ravi Jain, the committee’s press secretary, “We are harnessing the full potential of AI this time. This technology will redefine the experience. From breathtaking special effects to meticulously designed stage settings, AI allows us to visualise and coordinate every scene like never before. The special aspect is live dialogue on stage with nothing pre-recorded.“The stage itself is monumental — 140 feet long and 45 feet high — illuminated by an array of LED lights. While intricate artificial dance sequences will add to the grandeur, a crew of 200 and a cast of 70 are working tirelessly to bring the epic to life. “We expect thousands of spectators each day, drawn by the timeless story of Lord Ram,” said committee secretary Pradeep Sharan. “This Ramlila is not just a performance, but an immersive celebration where tradition meets cutting-edge technology.“AI is also the flavour at Nav Shri Dharmik Lila Committee’s event. Rahul Sharma, press secretary, said, “We will bring scenes to life like never before. Jungle or water, whatever it be, all will be created by AI videos.” He added, “Cutouts will be placed on the ground to honour Operation Sindoor. Also, social messaging, especially on hygiene and cleanliness, will be our focus.” Chief minister Rekha Gupta has been invited to the spectacle. At Indraprastha Extension, the Ramlila will blend tradition with education. Organising committee head Suresh Bindal said 800 students will compete in a quiz show, with the final to be held on the grand Ramlila stage. “Every day, children from various societies will present religious and cultural items before the Leela begins,” he said. The annual event conveys messages of unity and inclusivity. “Ram teaches us equality and harmony,” Bindal said, saying these qualities will be reinforced by dramatic sound effects, traditional Nagada drums and musical depictions.Dwarka Sector-10 is staging its own rendition of Operation Sindoor. “A massive stage measuring 140×160 ft has entry and exit gates designed to match the theme. 3D visuals and top-notch sound systems and a variety of food stalls should thrill the visitors,” said Pankaj Singh, media head, Dwarka Shri Ramlila Society. The fair will feature fun rides and a network of 102 CCTV cameras for security. Skilled artists will bring the epic to life on stage. “Every detail is crafted to give visitors an immersive and memorable experience,” said Singh. In Model Town, while honouring Operation Sindoor, well-known actors like Puneet Issar will be on stage according to Akhil Singhal, chairman, Nav Shri Manav Dharm Ramlila Committee. “The stage has been designed by experts from Mumbai. Technological enhancements include green crackers, special effects, crane-assisted scenes and elaborate lighting with lasers. We have a number of TV and Bollywood actors in lead roles with the supporting actors all being from the National School of Drama,” said Singhal.
