The public works department (PWD) officials said about 90% of the work had been completed. The superintending engineer of the PWD, Bharatkumar Baviskar, said initial notices were issued to contractors delaying the work with a penalty of Rs1 lakh per day for any further delay to ensure timely completion of the assignment. “We are following up with the contractors,” he said.Officials said the roads must meet the standards of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) — the world governing body for cycling — because the event would attract professional riders. The PWD called for close coordination with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to maintain uniformity across all race routes. Additionally, a third-party agency is being recommended to conduct regular inspections, and ensure high quality work in line with the UCI standards.Officials emphasised that completing the roads on time was critical not just for the cycling event but also for long-term infrastructure benefits in the region. “These roads will not only host India’s first professional cycling tour but will also improve connectivity across key talukas in Pune district. We are monitoring the progress daily and ensuring that all standards are met,” another senior PWD official said. The Pune Grand Challenge Tour, spanning multiple stages across varied terrain, will test riders’ endurance and skills while showcasing Pune as a hub for professional cycling in India. The ongoing roadworks, including widening and resurfacing, aim to provide safe, smooth and international standard roads for participants.
