PUNE: Two BBA students of a city-based private college were killed and two others suffered injuries after the car they were travelling in crashed into a container truck at Mamurdi near Dehu Road on the Pune-Mumbai highway on Thursday morning. The students were returning from Lonavla to Pune when the accident occurred, according to the Dehu Road police. The police identified the deceased students as Sidhhant Anand (23) from Jharkhand and Divyaraj Singh Rathod (22) from Jaipur in Rajasthan. The injured students, Niha Tamboli (20) and Harshvardhan Mishra (20), are undergoing treatment in a nearby hospital.“Tamboli was driving the car. He suffered severe injuries because of the steering wheel. The other student escaped with minor injuries,” senior inspector Vikram Bansode of the Dehu Road police said.Bansode said the accident occurred around 5.45am when the students were returning from Lonavla after a drive. When they reached Mamurdi on the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass, a container truck ahead of them suddenly slowed down because of rumbler strips on the road.“Before Tamboli could slow down, the car crashed into the rear of the container truck. Anand and Rathod, sitting on the left side of the car, were killed on the spot,” Bansode said.He said the police and residents of the area rescued Tamboli and Mishra, and sent them to the hospital. “We summoned the fire brigade to remove the bodies from the mangled remains of the car,” Bansode said.Gautam Ingawale, the fire officer from the Pimpri Chinchwad fire brigade, said the car was completely damaged in the accident. One body was in the front seat, and another was in the back seat. “We had to cut the vehicle to remove the bodies,” Ingawale said.Bansode said the police registered a case of causing death by negligence against the driver of the container truck. “The injured students told us that the container truck did not have a proper tail lamp. The car driver noticed the container truck very late, only after it slowed down, and crashed into it,” Bansode said.
