Protest in Nangloi as rly crossing to shut

New Delhi: Around 300 people protested on the railway tracks near outer Delhi’s Nangloi station on Wednesday afternoon after the railways planned to block a crossing to stop “trespassing” by locals. The demonstrators blocked the tracks from both sides, disrupting train services. A police officer said the railways planned to block the crossing near Sukhi Nahar in Prem Nagar, which was frequently used by local residents as a convenient route to cross the tracks. After receiving an alert around 4pm, police removed the protesters from the tracks and the train services resumed. However, protesters remained near the location. Police forces have been deployed to prevent any untoward incident.A senior official of Northern Railway said, “This location was being used for trespassing by many people, which was unsafe. The closure was done for public safety. If a foot overbridge is to be constructed, it must be done by the land-owning agency as the railways does not own the land there.”
