Police generate nearly Rs 4crore in fines for traffic violation with citizens’ participation

Pune: The city traffic police have generated fines worth Rs3.83 crore against 1,32,485 motorists for various traffic violations over the past three months, with active participation from citizens. “The Pune Traffic Police (PTP) application can be used by citizens to upload photographs of vehicles involved in different types of traffic offences. Based on these submissions, fines are generated,” Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said. So far, 93,190 people have downloaded the application, police said. Kumar was speaking at a function where citizens who uploaded the highest number of genuine traffic violation reports through the PTP app were felicitated. The police awarded a first prize of Rs50,000, a second prize of Rs25,000 and a third prize of Rs15,000. One of the award-winning citizens told TOI, “I was disturbed by motorists driving on footpaths or parking in no-parking zones. Earlier, I used to repeatedly call the police. After downloading the application, I understood its features and began uploading photographs of vehicles that repeatedly violated traffic rules.” “We will not tolerate indiscipline on city roads, and it is encouraging to see citizens contributing to our efforts,” Kumar said. “With citizens’ participation through the application, the Pune police have fined 1,32,485 motorists, generating a total of Rs 3.83 crore,” he added. “The application has enhanced the capacity of the police and made us more accountable,” the commissioner said.
