NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled out projects worth Rs 33,500 crore in Delhi on Sunday and said that after BJP came to power, “development has gained great momentum”. He said the difference between BJP govt and the “AAPda” govt is clear. “The method of the AAPda govt was less work and more excuses. Today, the development model in Delhi is no excuses, only work. Earlier, projects used to die in files. Today, projects are being implemented on the ground,” he said, adding that the launch of the projects was also proof of “how necessary it was for Delhi to be freed from the AAPda” a year ago.
BJP formed its govt in Delhi in Feb 2025 after a gap of 27 years, defeating AAP, which had ruled since 2015.AAP did not speak on the Prime Minister’s criticism of the party’s rule in Delhi when TOI reached out for a reaction.The Rs 33,500-crore projects include two new corridors of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation — Majlis Park-Maujpur Babarpur (Pink Line) and Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park (Magenta Line) — and three new corridors under Delhi Metro’s Phase V-A work. The package includes redevelopment projects worth Rs 15,200 crore under the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) plan to modernise ageing govt housing colonies and create infrastructure for govt employees and administrative offices. The event, held on the DDA Ground in north Delhi’s Burari, was attended by chief minister Rekha Gupta and Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar. “The new metro section… will provide convenience to lakhs of people. In particular, daily commute will become much easier for people in East and North-East Delhi. Travelling between Delhi and NCR cities like Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad and Gurgaion will become easier,” Modi said. “If the AAPda govt was not here, this project would have been completed much earlier.” Modi said modernising infrastructure and connectivity, such as the recently inaugurated Namo Bharat train and the expansion of the metro network to 375 km, was essential to showcase India’s confidence globally. “Under the double-engine govt, every transport facility in Delhi is being upgraded. More than 4,000 electric buses provided by central govt are serving the people of Delhi today. In just the last year alone, nearly 1,800 new buses were deployed on Delhi’s roads. These include hundreds of Devi buses, which connect colonies and neighbourhoods across the city,” the PM said.“For nearly 10 years, the AAPda govt here stalled every development project. Now our govt is working in mission mode to address various challenges. With the construction of the Peripheral Expressway, lakhs of vehicles no longer need to enter Delhi. BJP govt is also working on a very large scale to clean the Yamuna river, and projects worth crores of rupees have already been allocated for this purpose. The earlier AAPda govt did not care about the difficulties of the poor or the middle class. It left the health sector in a very poor condition. We used to write letters to the govt, and Govt of India also wrote letters urging them (the previous Delhi govt) to implement the Ayushman scheme, but they never cared about the poor,” Modi said. Under BJP rule, the Ayushman Bharat scheme was also implemented in Delhi, and people are receiving free treatment, Modi said. Several Ayushman Arogya Mandirs have been established, benefiting the poor, he added.Before coming to Burari, the Prime Minister visited Sarojini Nagar to review a newly built govt housing project. “These homes were built for govt employees who work day and night to fulfil the nation’s resolutions. It is important that they receive safe, clean and convenient housing. Today, thousands of such new flats were handed over to beneficiaries,” Modi said. The PM also highlighted the impact of the PM SVANidhi Yojana for street vendors. “In Delhi alone, nearly 2 lakh street vendors received about Rs 350 crore under this scheme. Just now, I got the opportunity to interact with some of the women street vendors. Listening to their stories of success filled my heart with pride,” Modi said. CM Gupta said: “This unprecedented expansion of the metro will reduce traffic pressure and strengthen our resolve for a pollution-free Delhi.”
