Nilesh Chavan got firearm licence after request by min: Cops

Pune: The Pune city police have submitted a report to the DGP office detailing how Nilesh Chavan, arrested in the Vaishnavi Hagawane alleged suicide case, was granted a firearm licence in 2022 following a request by former minister of state for home Satej Patil.A senior police officer told TOI, “It is not known how the two criminal cases against Chavan were not mentioned in the report before the firearm licence was sanctioned to him. Police had rejected his previous application seeking a firearm licence.”“We have sent a report to the DGP office in Mumbai explaining the timeline about how Chavan secured the firearm licence,” said the officer, while refusing to divulge any details.Meanwhile, Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said the Pune city police had cancelled or revoked 140 firearm licences in 2024 for various reasons. Out of the total, criminal cases were registered against 43 people after they secured the licences. Secondly, licences of 97 people were revoked or cancelled due to non-compliance with documents or not taking adequate precautions among other reasons. Meanwhile, the police granted licences to 28 citizens and rejected 404 applications.
