Navi Mumbai: A joint initiative was undertaken by a mountaineering team, Yashwanti Hikers and the Khopoli Municipal Council (KMC) to clean up the plastics dumped on Borghat along the Mumbai Pune expressway and highway sections. This marked the fourth in a series of such drives being taken up to upkeep the hilly terrain. The newly elected president and councillors of Khopoli joined the cleaning operation.
The KMC chief officer Pankaj Patil extended cooperation through sending their sanitation workers to join the group. A number of locals too, joined the mountaineers led by Padmakar Gaikwad. They moved around the ghat stretch and collected discarded plastics thrown by the visitors and motorists. After packing them up in large plastic bags the group assembled under an E-way bridge.Gaikwad explained to the team members about the need to conservate nature. The ghat section is a tourist spot. Gaikwad said, “The initiative will continue as it is a public one, through more citizens joining the drive. The participation of the recently elected KMC president, Kuldip Shende and councilors played a motivational factor among the participants.” The collected waste was safely disposed of by the KMC sanitation team.
