Mumbai: Police crack Sewri gold theft case, 4 arrested

Mumbai: The Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg police have made a breakthrough in a recent robbery where an armed gang barged into a gold manufacturing unit in Kalachowki area in Central Mumbai, assaulted the security guard and fled away with 400 grams of gold worth Rs 50 lakh. Police have arrested four persons namely Manish Rathod 24, Bhagwan Paraskar alias Mama (60), Mangal Kashyap (20) and Rohit Sharma (20). The security guard Rohit Sharma is one among them who tried to mislead the police as he himself was part of the robbery.Police are looking for one key accused Irfan Shaikh who is the brain behind the robbery. The incident took place on Tuesday night at Busa Industrial Estate, Sewri, where three men posing as delivery agents allegedly robbed 400 grams of gold ornaments worth ₹50 lakh after stabbing the security guard on duty.According to the police, the accused watchman Rohit Kumar Sharma (20) had lied to police that he was alone in the unit after Diwali pooja when the trio knocked at the door, claiming to deliver a parcel. When he opened it, one of them attacked him with a knife, stabbing him in the thigh, before the gang looted the ornaments kept in a drawer. Rohit managed to alert nearby workers, who rushed him to KEM Hospital. A case was registered under Sections 309, 331, and 333 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant provisions of the Indian Arms Act. The crime branch as well the local police were probing the case.During the investigation, the police, while scanning the cctv footage of the area, identified a habitual offender named Rohit from Wadala, who turned out to be a key accused. His questioning led to the arrest of three more accomplices. Police said efforts are on to trace the stolen gold ornaments and identify possible insiders who might have tipped off the gang.
