Thane: Cabinet minister Pratap Sarnaik on Monday announced a fresh deadline of Jan 2026 for the completion of all pending works on Ghodbunder highway, ensuring a smooth ride on the arterial road.Presently, the highway stretch within Thane city limits is undergoing a major overhaul as the service lanes on either side are being merged into the main carriageway and concretised. This has resulted in several lanes being blocked, causing congestion for city and outbound traffic. Ghodbunder highway is an arterial road connecting the far northeast and west ends of Mumbai suburbs, cutting through Thane city. It is also a vital connector to Gujarat, North Maharashtra, Navi Mumbai, and Konkan.“The traffic woes on Ghodbunder highway will end by Jan 2026. The target has been set for completing the ongoing resurfacing work on Gaimukh Ghat, service road widening, laying water pipelines, and relocating power lines along the stretch,” Sarnaik said after addressing a review meeting at Thane civic HQ over ongoing projects in his constituency. The road resurfacing at the Ghat section and repairs and resurfacing of all flyovers along the highway stretch within the city limits will be done in coordination with traffic police. He added that the Public Works Department will expedite the process of handing over the entire stretch of the highway to the Thane Municipal Corporation after the resurfacing work.In addition, the pace of all ongoing civic upgradation works, such as the beautification of Nagla Bandar Creek and Mangrove Park, the swimming pool at Upvan, Balasaheb Thackeray Art Gallery, Anandibai Joshi Hospital, Kasarvadavli and Bhayander Pada gardens, Lata Mangeshkar Music School, and community halls, markets, and sports complexes, will see progress, Sarnaik said.
