New Delhi: In a suspected hit-and-run case, a 27-year-old man was killed and a 30-year-old woman injured after their scooter was struck by a vehicle on Wazirpur flyover in front of a mall in northwest Delhi’s Netaji Subhash Place, Pitampura, early Sunday. Police said while the man fell through the space between the two carriageways of the flyover and was found lying on Ring Road underneath, the woman was discovered unconscious on the flyover itself. The victim, identified as Sourabh, was a resident of Chuna Bhatti in Kirti Nagar. The injured woman, Priyanka, resides in the same area.
Police said a PCR call was received around 4am Sunday at Subhash Place police station about the accident. When cops arrived at the spot, they found a scooter lying in a damaged condition on the flyover. Sourabh was moved by the PCR van to a hospital, where he was declared ‘brought dead’. Priyanka, the pillion rider, was also admitted to a hospital and later referred to another facility for further treatment. A case was subsequently registered.Police said till Monday evening, Priyanka was not fit for a statement. “CCTV footage was checked in nearby areas. We are yet to determine what kind of vehicle hit the scooter. Since it was night-time, not many eyewitnesses were present either,” a senior police officer said.A passerby who made the PCR call, Varsha Yadav, said she was on her way to the railway station when she saw a person lying in a pool of blood on the flyover. “I initially thought someone might be lying intoxicated after celebrating New Year. But I then saw blood and thought it was better to alert the cops before someone ran over the person,” she said, adding many vehicles were passing by, but no one stopped to help or check.Several similar incidents on flyovers have been reported in the recent past. In Sept last year, a 49-year-old scooterist died after being hit by a heavy vehicle and thrown off the NH-24 Mangalam Cut flyover in east Delhi’s Pandav Nagar.
