'Maaro maaro': Delhi Police team attacked during protest over SC stray dog order; case registered

NEW DELHI: A police team was attacked in the Lodhi Garden area of New Delhi by people protesting against Supreme Court order to remove all stray dogs from the localities in the Delhi-NCR region and put them in shelter homes. Police said legal action is being initiated.Sources said the Station House Officer (SHO) of a New Delhi police station was among those assaulted during the incident, which took place on Wednesday evening.

Officers reached the spot after receiving information about an unauthorised protest and attempted to disperse the crowd, as no permission was granted for the gathering.In a video from the scene, two individuals can be seen running toward the SHO and physically assaulting him.Other police personnel were also pushed, while some voices in the background can be heard shouting “maaro maaro” (beat them), and others responding with “maaro mat” (don’t beat them).Meanwhile, Delhi Police have registered a separate case in connection with an earlier protest against the same Supreme Court order near Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place.The case has been filed under Section 223 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
