Lowest average AQI in 5 yrs, mercury to rise from tomorrow

New Delhi: Several parts of Delhi received incessant rain on Monday. There are chances of very light to light rain over the next few days. No colour-coded warning has been issued for the next five days.According to the India Meteorological Department, Safdarjung, which is the city’s base station, logged 25.6 mm of rainfall from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm. During the same period, Najafgarh received 61 mm, Palam 43.2 mm and Pusa 24.5 mm. Krishna Kumar, scientist, IMD, said, “The monsoon trough is close to Delhi and there is ample feeding of moisture from the Arabian Sea. There is a low-pressure area over the north-west and a western disturbance is impacting the region. Since all these systems are interchanging with each other, it led to intense rain activity.“He added that heavy rainfall was recorded in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan in the past 24 hours.The maximum temperature on Monday was 30.8 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity oscillated between 85% and 100%. The minimum temperature settled at 23.7 degrees Celsius. The day temperature may remain around 30 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and it may rise up to 34 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and Thursday.Meanwhile, Delhi recorded the second-lowest average Air Quality Index for the period from Jan to Aug in 2025 in the past eight years. During this period, 2020, which saw Covid-19 outbreak, recorded the lowest average AQI.The average AQI of Delhi for the period Jan to Aug during the current year was 172, as against 187 in 2024, 174 in 2023, 194 in 2022, 192 in 2021, 147 in 2020, 199 in 2019 and 203 in 2018. “The average AQI for the month of Aug was 89 in 2025, 72 in 2024, 116 in 2023, 93 in 2022, 107 in 2021, 64 in 2020, 86 in 2019 and 111 in 2018,” said the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).This year, days with AQI below 201 for the month of Aug were 23, as against 19 days in 2018, 22 days in 2019, 31 days in 2020, 11 days in 2021, 18 days in 2022, 8 days in 2023, and 29 days in 2024. “CAQM is working closely with various stakeholders to take effective measures for prevention, control, and abatement of air pollution and to improve the air quality in Delhi-NCR, and efforts will be intensified to further improve upon the air quality scenario in Delhi in the coming days.”
