KALYAN: A 30-year-old private bank employee from Kalyan East allegedly died by suicide after reportedly after fearing the onset of rabies symptoms following a dog bite. The incident, which occurred in the Tisgaon Naka area, has left residents shocked and has renewed concerns about awareness of rabies treatment and mental health support.
The deceased, identified as Ayush Vishwanath Amin (30), lived in Sahjeevan Society near Tisgaon Naka. He had been employed for over eight years with Bharat Bank at its Thane branch.According to Kolsewadi police findings, Amin was bitten on the leg by a stray dog a few days prior to the incident. Sources said he had taken only one anti-rabies injection after the bite. Family members told investigators that over the last few days, they noticed unusual behavioural changes, which they believe may have been linked to his deteriorating physical and mental condition.Police said that on Sunday evening, when no one else was at home, Amin allegedly wrote a suicide note and died by hanging. When parents return back they found him hanging and informed to police. Investigators revealed that he attached a medical report showing him rabis positive along with the suicide note. In the note, he reportedly expressed fear about his worsening condition, stating that he could not face his parents as it would cause them immense distress. He also mentioned that no one should be held responsible for his death.Senior Police Inspector Hemant Gurav from Kolsewadi Police Station said, “As per suicide note it appeared that the deceased under severe stress following the dog bite and related health concerns. Further investigation is underway.”Amin is survived by his elderly parents and a younger brother. Relatives said the family is devastated, adding that they had recently begun searching for a suitable match for his marriage.Following the tragedy, local corporator Mahesh Dashrath Gaikwad visited the bereaved family and urged the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) to intensify measures to control the stray dog population and expand sterilisation drives in the Tisgaon area.Health officials reiterated that rabies is preventable with timely and complete vaccination. Medical experts emphasised that anyone bitten by a dog must immediately seek medical attention and complete the full Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV) course. They also advised families to provide emotional support and seek counselling if a person shows signs of fear, confusion, or mental distress after such incidents.KDMC Health Officer Dr. Deepa Shukla said the civic body is collecting details about the case and is working on starting one more additional dog sterilisation infrastructure in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines and also trying to fix dog feeding spots.
