New Delhi: Delhi Police arrested the main contractor in connection with the death of 25-year-old Kamal Dhyani, who died after falling into an open pit in west Delhi’s Janakpuri area. The contractor, Himanshu Gupta, was apprehended in Udaipur, Rajasthan, where he was hiding following the incident, said deputy commissioner of police (West) Darade Sharad Bhaskar. Gupta’s company held the contract for the work at the site. Two individuals were already arrested: Rajesh Kumar Prajapati, a subcontractor, and Yogesh Kumar, a labourer. Prajapati allegedly called Gupta shortly after the incident to report what happened. Dhyani was returning home from his office when he fell into a pit that was dug only a few hours earlier. Although he was believed to have fallen around midnight on Feb 6, his body was discovered around 8 am next day when a passerby alerted the police. Family members said Dhyani regularly used the same route to commute to work and was familiar with the area. “In the evening, he had no idea that a pit had been dug there. There were no warnings or proper barricades,” his father said.Police initially registered a case under sections related to culpable homicide. Later, additional charges of criminal conspiracy, destruction of evidence, and common intention were added. A source said that despite being aware of the incident, the suspects allegedly failed to inform the police and instead conspired to conceal the matter. A senior police officer said that Prajapati allegedly instructed Kumar to cover the site with a green sheet and place barricades near the accident spot, an act investigators said amounted to tampering with evidence.
