Mumbai: The police busted an inter-state gang of heavy vehicle thieves and seized six stolen trucks and trailers from them, collectively worth Rs 1 crore.On June 8, a 10-wheeler cement trailer was stolen from Goregaon (East). After an FIR, a team supervised by DCP Mahesh Chemte and senior inspector Girish Bane tracked down the vehicle to Surat. The accused, Narsingh Ramswaroop (44), was arrested. On interrogation, he led the police team, alos comprising detection officer Indrajit Bhise, to the mastermind of the racket. The mastermind, identified as Javed Shaikh, was arrested from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on June 10. Shaikh has been booked in seven prior cases across the state. On questioning Shaikh, police learnt that the accused would steal heavy vehicles, modify their engine and chassis numbers, register them and sell them. Five stolen trucks were recovered from Rajasthan and Surat, police said.
