Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general of meteorology at IMD, said, “The atmosphere is dynamic. One possible reason for the colder conditions could be fewer western disturbances this winter. A broader factor might be large-scale features like weak La Niña conditions. While La Niña does not have a direct correlation, it can influence weather patterns over northwest and central India, though this requires further verification. There could be some role.”Another official said during La Niña years, winters over the Indian region tend to be colder. “The behaviour of the polar vortex also impacts the occurrence of cold-wave conditions in India,” the official said.On Maharashtra and central India, Mohapatra said, “For parts of central India, including Maharashtra, the probability of below-normal temperatures is higher during the Dec 2025 to Feb 2026 period.”On Monday, the minimum temperature in the city rose slightly but the morning was still chilly as Shivajinagar and Pashan both recorded 10°C, with Lohegaon reporting 14.4°C.
