IIT’s smart system to help cut power usage at homes

New Delhi: Imagine a home that knows when you step out, senses a cool breeze outside and instantly adjusts your appliances to save power and cut costs, all on its own. IIT Delhi is working to make this a reality.The institute is developing an AI-based smart energy management system that uses data from weather conditions, occupancy, real-time electricity prices and user habits to control appliances intelligently. Strong security features protect user data and a dashboard shows real-time savings. The project is being developed in partnership with the Eastern Regional Load Dispatch Centre (ERLDC) under Grid-India.At the heart of the joint project is a smart device that acts almost like the home’s personal energy strategist. Using AI, machine learning and optimisation algorithms, the system will constantly analyse changing inputs like electricity tariffs that vary by the hour, weather shifts, whether someone is at home or even a user’s comfort preferences—and automatically adjust how appliances operate.By shifting usage to times when renewable energy is abundant, the system cuts bills, reduces waste and supports a more flexible, stable grid.As per experts, smart plugs, sensors and an AI-powered microcontroller act as a home’s energy manager—switching appliances on and off, adjusting power use and responding to prices, weather, and occupancy.Beyond convenience, the project pays special attention to something every household now worries about—data privacy. Advanced encryption and secure wireless communication are being built into the system to ensure that the constant flow of user data stays protected. A simple, easy-to-use dashboard will allow consumers to monitor usage patterns and watch their savings grow in real time.“IIT Delhi is focusing on developing innovative solutions that support India’s energy transition,” said professor Preeti Ranjan Panda, dean of corporate relations. “With rising electricity demand and dynamic pricing structures, it is essential to empower consumers with intelligent tools to manage their energy use efficiently. The integration of AI with smart home technologies marks a significant step toward sustainable and consumer-centric power systems.“For ERLDC, the partnership is a glimpse into the future of grid operations, where consumers will no longer be passive users but active participants. “As India’s grid evolves to integrate renewable energy and digital technologies, consumer-driven demand response will play a critical role. This initiative will help develop indigenous technology that bridges the gap between operational efficiency and consumer empowerment,” said Rajib Sutradhar, executive director of ERLDC.
