The deceased, Priya Deven Prasad (16), had lost her younger brother Suraj (6) and sister Archana (9), in the same accident, when they were killed on the spot. The police have arrested the bus driver, Nagnath Gujar, who was found driving in an inebriated condition. After the accident, the public on the road had thrashed him. On Tuesday, senior police inspector Balaji Pandhare of the Hinjewadi police told TOI that they have also arrested Bhausaheb Gholam, the sub-vendor-cum-manager of the transport operator. “Gujar and Gholam were produced before the court on Tuesday and remanded in police for three days,” said Pandhare. In the accident, three others were injured, including motorcycle driver Avinash Chavan (26) and two pedestrians, Noor Alam and Vimal Ozarkar (40). Chavan, whose injuries are critical, is undergoing treatment at Sassoon General Hospital, said Hinjewadi police officers. The accident occurred around 5.45pm on Monday when Priya, who went to pick up her younger siblings from school, was returning home. The bus, ferrying employees of an IT firm, hit them a few metres away from their father’s dry cleaning shop. Priya’s father, Deven Prasad, first took her to the Aundh Hospital and later shifted her to the Sassoon hospital, where she succumbed to the injuries, said police sub-inspector Vikas Taktode of the Hinjewadi police. Taktode added that medical tests confirmed that Gujar was driving the bus under the influence of alcohol. He also damaged the electric DP along the road and a hoarding. The police have registered a case against Gujar, Gholam, the transport operator, manager, and a person entrusted to check the driver’s fitness before allowing him to take the wheel.
