HC to govt: Give info on rehab land for SGNP encroachers

Mumbai: Bombay high court on Monday asked the state govt to inform it about land for rehabilitation of encroachers at Sanjay Gandhi National Park.A bench led by Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar was hearing a contempt petition by Conservation Action Trust regarding non-compliance with HC’s 1997 order in a PIL by Bombay Environmental Action Group to save the park from encroachments. It was also hearing a PIL by Samyak Janhit Seva, a society of slumdwellers, seeking rehabilitation of those eligible. Advocate general Birendra Saraf said there has been a delay and urged for “one more opportunity” as land needs to be identified. He said the state has not been able to rehabilitate and remove encroachers despite its best efforts. “There were 10 lands found to be incapable of development for this purpose,” said Saraf. The judges said the state must apprise it on the land on Thursday. tnn
