Hadapsar man loses Rs1.2 crore, software engineer Rs95.2 lakh in online share-trade frauds

Pune: A software engineer from Wakad lost Rs95.2 lakh and a resident of Hadapsar drained Rs1.2 crore in separate online share trade frauds between Sept and Nov this year.An officer from the Pune cyber police said the 48-year-old resident of Hadapsar lost Rs1.2 crore to the cyber crooks in an online share trading fraud between Sept and Oct. The crooks offered him good returns on his investments in IPOs and took money from him in different bank accounts. “The victim transferred the money from his own account, as well as from accounts of his sister-in-law and brother-in-law,” the officer said.He said the Hadapsar resident could see in the app that he had earned a profit of Rs2.25 crore on his investments. “When he tried to withdraw Rs1,000, the money was transferred to his bank account. But as he tried to withdraw larger amounts, he was denied permission. The crooks also stopped responding to his calls,” the officer said.An officer from the Pimpri Chinchwad cyber police said the software engineer from Wakad was added to a group of investors on a cellphone messaging app. He was assured good returns on his investments in the stock market and was made to download an app to trade and monitor the profit.“The crooks then sought money from him in different bank accounts. He transferred Rs95.2 lakh and could see in the app that he had earned a profit of Rs5.76 crore on his investments,” the officer said.He said whenever the software engineer tried to withdraw his money, the crooks cited some reason and demanded more money from him. After realising that he was duped, he approached the police and lodged a complaint. “Our investigations are on,” the officer said.
