Govt to flatten garbage mountains in 2026, take more green steps, says CM Rekha Gupta

New Delhi: In 2026, the landfills in the city will be flattened, chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Wednesday in her New Year message, emphasising that 2026 would be about delivering on the promises made. She asserted that 2025 was a year of preparation while 2026 would take the initiatives “to their destination”. Gupta highlighted key steps taken by her govt in 2025, including the introduction of an education Act to check arbitrary school fees, rollout of free medical treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh under Ayushman Bharat and the launch of Atal Canteens offering meals at Rs 5.

Taking a dig at opposition AAP, she said “some people tried to keep us entangled in AQI and AIQ” — a reference to CM’s slip of the tongue — but govt did a lot of work that “Delhi was waiting for a long time”. “In 2025, we were entrusted with new responsibilities, faced new challenges and received abundant opportunities to work. Several schemes were approved to accelerate infrastructure development in Delhi. Significant work was undertaken to improve ease of doing business,” Gupta said. “From an environmental perspective, if I were to highlight what people noticed most this year, it would be the beginning of end-to-end carpeting of roads.” New machinery was introduced for better cleaning and bonfires and open burning were stopped, she added. “These are only beginnings, there is still much more to be done.” Listing the work for the next year, CM said the legacy problems would be solved and the landfills flattened in 2026. “Delhi faces numerous problems and long-standing legacy issues, all of which must be resolved in 2026. We inaugurated Delhi’s first biogas plant in 2025 and many more biogas plants need to be set up.” The process has started to set up plants to treat e-waste, she pointed out. “We must eliminate Delhi’s garbage mountains and work more effectively on this issue.“She added, “To those who created these garbage mountains and now speak about their removal, I wish to respond clearly: in 2026, Delhi’s garbage mountains will be eliminated. Together, we will align Delhi with Vision 2047.”Govt will undertake all those tasks for Delhi that its people want and ensure solutions to its problems, Gupta said. “I extend my best wishes to all of you, may 2026 bring a new dawn and new happiness into your lives.”
