Pune: The state health department has directed govt hospitals to discontinue the use of mercury-based medical instruments, including thermometers and traditional sphygmomanometers, in its bid to safeguard patients, healthcare workers and the environment.The department on Dec 26, 2025, directed district and municipal health systems to adopt safe alternatives, such as mercury-free digital and electronic devices. “Mercury-based medical equipment will soon be phased out from govt health institutions. Health institutions have been strictly prohibited from purchasing new mercury-aided devices. The use of digital or aneroid (without liquid) alternatives has been recommended,” Dr Sandeep Sangale, the additional director of family and maternal health, state health department, told TOI.“The Union health department issued guidelines to state govt, following which we circulated instructions to all district surgeons, medical colleges, district and sub-district hospitals, and rural and urban health facilities,” he said.According to the circular, all mercury-based devices currently in use must be registered and stored safely. “Their collection and disposal will be carried out through authorised agencies in compliance with central government guidelines and pollution control board’s regulations,” Dr Sangale said.Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)’s health facilities are following the directive. “If a mercury device breaks or comes into contact with humans, it can cause severe health hazards. Improper disposal of mercury can contaminate soil, water and air, posing a significant environmental risk. This decision prioritises the safety of patients, healthcare workers and the environment,” said Dr Rajesh Dighe, assistant health officer, PMC.
