Vastu Direction For Gods And Idols: According to Vastu Shastra, the direction of idols and pictures of deities in the puja room is extremely important. This directly affects the results of worship and the flow of positive energy in the home. A fundamental principle of Vastu Shastra is that the devotee (the person performing the puja) should always face an auspicious direction during worship. The direction of the idols of deities is determined based on this principle.
The Best Direction Combination
The most auspicious and energetic position in the puja room is one where the deity faces west and the worshipper faces east.
- The east is the best direction for the devotee. This is the direction of sunrise and knowledge/brilliance. Worshipping facing this direction increases concentration, provides positive energy, and brings strength and wisdom to life.
- If the deity faces west, the devotee worships facing east. The idols of deities are placed facing west.
- Place the idols so that they face west, allowing you to sit facing east.
Second Best Direction Combination
- The devotee’s face north is considered to be the direction of Kubera, the god of wealth. Worshipping facing this direction attracts wealth, prosperity, career success, and happiness.
- If the deity faces south, the idols are placed facing south.

Prohibited Directions and Important Rules
- The devotee’s face south is considered to be the direction of Yama. Worshipping facing this direction is considered inauspicious, as it can bring restlessness and prevent the full benefits of the worship.
- It is forbidden to place idols facing south alone. This direction pushes energy outward.
- If the deity faces north, the devotee must face south, which is prohibited in Vaastu.
God Face in Pooja Room Most Important Rule
- It is always considered most auspicious for the prayer room in the home to be located in the northeast corner (Ishan Kon). This direction is the center of divine energy and positivity.
- In the temple, the idols should not have their backs touching the wall. There should be at least a 1-inch gap between them and the wall to maintain the flow of energy.
- Two idols/pictures should never be placed facing each other. This causes a clash of energies.
- Idols or pictures of the deity should always be placed above the ground, on a pedestal or altar. Their height should be such that their feet are parallel to or slightly higher than the devotee’s chest.
- Idols of fierce deities such as Goddess Kali, Shani Dev, or Bhairava should not be placed in the home temple; these idols are worshipped with special rituals.
