Mumbai: Even as degree colleges prepare to declare their third merit list on Thursday, many have got requests from aspirants who have missed out on the deadline to apply. Principals claimed they are getting requests from even students who have scored above 90%.Though the Mumbai University (MU) portal will re-open for admissions after the third round gets over, colleges are expecting students even with higher scores to queue up for admissions this year.“Admissions in colleges affiliated with Mumbai University usually start in the last week of May or the first week of June. This year, owing to HSC results being declared in May first week, the date was advanced by a few weeks. Many students may not have been in town then. They have now started returning from their vacation and are claiming they were unaware of early admissions,” said a principal. An MU official said they usually reopen the admission portal after three rounds. Colleges will be putting out their third list on Thursday and the round will conclude on June 10. The MU schedule recommends commencement of the academic session from June 13.Another principal said admissions were very slow this year and also claimed that this could be one of the reasons for lower cutoffs in some of the popular courses. There is also another bunch of students who missed out on filling either MU’s pre-enrolment form or the college’s form. “We get this set of students every year as many still think admissions in degree colleges are centralised like the first-year junior college process. Only when we put out our cutoff list do they find out they were not even part of the applicants’ pool,” said the principal. This year, the cutoffs at even leading colleges dropped below 90%, for BA and BCom, which never budge from the first list.
