Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a significant festival in Hinduism, symbolising the triumph of good over evil. It marks the day when Goddess Durga defeated the demon Mahishasura, and it is celebrated on the 10th day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) in the month of Ashwin. Each year, this festival is observed with great enthusiasm and devotion.

This year, there has been some confusion over the exact date. To clarify, Ujjain-based astrologer Acharya Anand Bhardwaj has provided guidance based on the Vedic calendar. According to him, Dashami Tithi will begin at 7:01 pm on October 1 and end at 7:10 pm on October 2. As a result, Dussehra will be observed on October 2, 2025.

Ravana Dahan

The ritual of Ravana Dahan (burning of Ravana’s effigy), which represents the destruction of evil, takes place during the Pradosh Kaal, just after sunset. On this day, sunset will occur at 6:06 pm, making it the ideal time for Ravana Dahan.

This year’s Dussehra will be particularly auspicious as it coincides with Ravi Yoga, a powerful planetary alignment believed to eliminate all kinds of negative influences. In addition to Ravi Yoga, Sukarma Yoga and Dhriti Yoga will also be in effect, enhancing the spiritual and astrological significance of the day.

Why Is Dussehra celebrated?

According to Hindu scriptures, Dussehra commemorates Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana in the Treta Yuga. On this day, Rama defeated Ravana and rescued Goddess Sita, symbolising the triumph of truth and righteousness (dharma) over falsehood and adharma (unrighteousness).

Traditionally, the festival also marks the conclusion of Navratri celebrations. Theatrical performances of Ramlila are staged across the country during Navratri, culminating in the burning of the effigy of Ravana on Dussehra. The day is also marked by fairs, community gatherings, and prayers held across India.
