Pune: The Kothrud police have launched manhunt for two men who applied adhesive tape to the cash tray of an ATM and stole Rs 10,000 from the Kothrud branch of a cooperative bank on Sept 3.A bank officer (50) and a resident of Vadgaon Budruk lodged a complaint with the Kothrud police on Friday evening.Senior inspector Sandeep Deshmane of Kothrud police said, “After receiving the complaint application, we laid a trap in and around the ATM kiosk. However, none of them turned up and then we decided to register an FIR.” Police have registered a case of theft in this regard.Speaking about the modus operandi of the duo, Deshmane said, “They enter an ATM kiosk when it is empty and apply adhesive tape inside the cash tray’s flap. When someone tries to withdraw the cash, the cash does not come out of the cash tray. The currency notes remain glued to the tape inside.”“The ATM shows a failed transaction and the person who was trying to withdraw the cash leaves the kiosk. As it is a failed transaction, the money was not debited from the bank account of the person who tried to withdraw the cash,” he said. “After the person leaves, the duo enters the ATM kiosk and they just pull out the currency notes. We suspect that they have done this in other ATM units also,” Deshmane said.
