New Delhi: Passengers had a narrow escape on Thursday morning after a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus caught fire at Dhaula Kuan, following a collision with a motorcycle. The incident triggered panic at the bus stop, but timely action by the staff ensured all commuters were safely evacuated, police said. According to police, a PCR call was received at Delhi Cantt police station around 10.53am, reporting a fire in a DTC bus. The call was made by the conductor of the bus, which was operating on route 776 from Uttam Nagar Bus Terminal to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (Ghumanhera Depot). “The bus had halted at the Defence Officers Enclave, Dhaula Kuan stop, to allow passengers to disembark when a motorcycle rammed into its rear. The two-wheeler became lodged under the CNG bus, and a suspected spark led to the fire outbreak,” a senior police officer said. On noticing the flames, the bus driver and conductor acted swiftly to evacuate all passengers. Meanwhile, the motorcycle rider fled the scene. Within minutes, the bus was engulfed in flames and was completely gutted. Two fire tenders from Delhi Fire Services were rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. Police and fire department confirmed that there were no casualties. A police crime team visited the site for inspection, and a mechanical examination of the bus was conducted. “The motorcycle was found registered in the name of Sameer Rohilla, a resident of East of Kailash, Sriniwaspuri, south Delhi. Subsequent inquiries revealed that the rider sustained injuries in the collision and is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS,” the officer added. The incident also caused brief traffic congestion at Dhaula Kuan, one of the city’s busiest junctions.Police said further inquiry into the matter is underway.
