Drunk driver attempts to abduct cop in Warje, held

Pune: A 25-year-old drunk driver allegedly made an attempt to abduct a policeman when the latter tried to stop the Kothrud resident after he hit four vehicles on the busy NDA road in Warje on Tuesday afternoon.A senior police officer was trailing the car intercepted it. Warje police later detained the car driver.Uttamnagar police station’s senior inspector Raghvendra Kshirsagar, who was heading to Shivajinagar court, said, “My vehicle got stuck in the traffic jam. We then used the hooter and public address system of my vehicle to clear the traffic when we spotted a car driver abusing and threatening other car and tempo drivers. As the traffic became clearer, we realised that the car driver had hit several vehicles while heading towards Warje from Shivane. I immediately alerted the traffic police constables at the Warje chowk to stop the car.”“Two traffic constables came to the chowk after receiving my call. One of the constables asked the driver to pull his car to the left side of the road. However, he raced with the car. The traffic constable then saved himself but managed to grab the handle of the co-passenger seat. He jumped in the car and ordered him to stop. However, he started accelerating towards Ambedkar chowk from Warje chowk. We decided to chase it as it may hit other vehicles. After a brief chase, we intercepted it,” Kshirsagar said.“We pulled the driver out from the car and also rescued the constable,” he said adding, “We took him to Warje police station for further legal action,” he said. Warje police said the car driver’s medical test was done and it was found that he was driving the car in an inebriated condition. “We have registered an FIR against him,” a police officer said.
