Delhi shocker: 2 cops injured in knife attack; history-sheeter arrested; pistol recovered

NEW DELHI: Two police personnel displayed exemplary courage after they were injured in a knife attack while attempting to arrest a history-sheeter in Outer Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy area on Saturday. Despite sustaining injuries, the officers refused to retreat and successfully apprehended the accused.The accused was identified as Ravi, alias Panchi (38), a resident of Shahbad Dairy.Police said that on January 17, while on patrol duty near Gupta Colony, Head Constable Kuldeep and Constable Neeraj received information about Ravi’s presence in the area. He was reportedly armed and planned to commit a robbery.“Considering the potential threat to public safety, the policemen moved to intercept the suspect. On noticing the police team, Ravi attempted to flee. A chase followed, during which the officers caught up with him,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami said.While resisting arrest, the accused allegedly attacked the cops with a sharp-edged weapon. Kuldeep sustained 2 stab injuries to his upper back and near the armpit. Neeraj was also attacked, with the accused striking at his waist 3 times. 2 blows were blocked by his service belt, though he sustained a puncture injury to his hip.Despite being injured, they prevented the accused from escaping and overpowered him. Police said a loaded country-made pistol was recovered from his possession.The injured personnel were taken to a hospital for treatment.A case was registered under Sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from duty) and 221 (obstructing a public servant in the discharge of official functions) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the Arms Act.Police said Ravi is a known bad character of the area, with at least 12 previous cases registered against him, including robbery, snatching, house-breaking and Arms Act violations at police stations such as Shahbad Dairy and Samaypur Badli.Senior Delhi Police officials commended Kuldeep and Neeraj for their actions during the operation. Police said their intervention helped prevent a serious offence and led to the recovery of a weapon. Recommendations for awards and commendations for both officers are under process.
