New Delhi: Delhi Jal Board has informed National Green Tribunal that it will repair the peripheral sewer lines in Janakpuri’s A1 Block by June 30 so that people do not receive contaminated water. However, for a permanent solution, DJB will later replace both the water and sewer lines which are 40 years old.Recently, Central Pollution Control Board had found total coliform and E. coli in drinking water samples from six houses in Janakpuri.The undertaking by DJB to resolve the matter came after the tribunal criticised the body for not taking steps to provide clean drinking water to residents. The tribunal is hearing a plea by the residents of A1 Block, Janakpuri, who claimed that they were not receiving fresh drinking water.In the undertaking dated June 4, DJB said, “The restoration or repair work of the peripheral sewer line is currently underway and shall be completed on or before June 30, and the problem will be remediated. It will be ensured that none of the residents receives a supply of water containing E. coli and total coliform.”“The request for the budget in the current year’s action plan has been made. Upon availability of the budget, the tenders for the work will be called, and the work will be executed. The work will be completed in a period of six months after the award of works and after the rainy season is over. This has also been informed to the applicant RWA by the concerned executive engineer,” it added.TOI earlier reported that out of 20 random samples collected from tap water of 20 houses in Janakpuri’s A1 block, CPCB found total coliform and E. coli in six samples. Total coliform and E. coli should be nil in drinking water. DJB stated that it also collected samples from five houses where water contamination was found in the CPCB report. However, the samples were found to meet the potable water standards, it added.
