New Delhi: Rooftop solar expansion under PM’s Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme, power infrastructure beneath flyovers and a Rs 17,000-crore upgrade of transmission and distribution networks form the core of Delhi govt’s roadmap to meet the capital’s rapidly rising electricity demand. At a review meeting of the power sector chaired by CM Rekha Gupta, officials outlined a multi-pronged strategy aimed at ensuring uninterrupted and sustainable power supply. Gupta asked departments to accelerate rooftop solar installations, particularly on govt buildings, and launch an awareness drive to boost household participation in the Surya Ghar scheme. This year, Delhi’s peak demand — typically recorded during the summer months of June and July — crossed 8,400 MW. It is growing annually by 4-5%, driven by rising population, increased use of air-conditioners and the growing adoption of electric vehicles. Peak demand is projected to touch 11,500-12,000 MW by 2030 and nearly 20,000 MW by 2040. According to officials, solar energy will play a central role in reducing dependence on conventional sources while meeting incremental demand. To address severe land constraints in the capital, govt is exploring the installation of power distribution infrastructure beneath flyovers and in other unused or underutilised spaces. Distribution companies were asked to conduct feasibility studies, especially in high-density areas where expanding substations and networks became increasingly difficult. The meeting also reviewed a capital expenditure plan of about Rs 17,000 crore, to be rolled out over the next three years by Delhi Transco Limited and the city’s discoms. The investments will focus on strengthening transmission lines, grid substations and last-mile distribution to improve reliability and reduce outages, said officials.Officials informed CM that procedures for installing solar panels on agricultural land are being simplified to further boost clean energy generation. Gaps in distribution infrastructure across assembly constituencies will also be addressed to ensure uniformity in supply across the city, they said.
