NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Monday took into custody Gaganpreet Kaur, the woman accused of driving the BMW that fatally struck senior finance ministry officer Navjot Singh in Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan area. She was apprehended from Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, where she was undergoing treatment.The has been taken in custody for further questioning and legal action.

Singh, 52, a deputy secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs and resident of Hari Nagar, died in the crash on Sunday afternoon. His wife, Sandeep, who was riding pillion, sustained serious injuries and remains under treatment.

In her statement to police, Sandeep alleged that after the collision she repeatedly pleaded with Gaganpreet to take them to the nearest hospital, as her husband was unconscious and required urgent first aid. Instead, the BMW occupants allegedly took them to a small hospital in GTB Nagar — around 22 km away — where the couple was kept waiting outside on a stretcher. She claimed her appeals for immediate care at closer hospitals such as AIIMS or the Army Base Hospital were ignored.Sandeep also identified the driver as Gaganpreet Kaur and recalled that the blue BMW, bearing registration number 0008, had overturned on the road during the incident.Police have registered a case of culpable homicide and are probing the matter under Section 238 of the BNS Act, which relates to destruction of evidence or providing false information to shield an offender.According to eyewitnesses, the BMW — allegedly driven by Gaganpreet with her husband seated beside her — first struck the central verge before colliding with Singh’s motorcycle near Metro pillar no. 67. The impact caused the motorcycle to crash into a bus. Investigators suspect the car was being driven at high speed and that Gaganpreet lost control.After the accident, Gaganpreet, her husband, and their two children transported the injured couple to the GTB Nagar facility instead of nearby hospitals. As per the deceased’s friend, the hospital belongs to the driver’s relatives.Police control room received three calls about a traffic jam near Delhi Cantt Metro Station soon after the crash. When officers reached the spot, they found the BMW turned sideways and the motorcycle lying near the divider. Later, GTB Nagar hospital confirmed that Navjot Singh had succumbed to his injuries.Both Gaganpreet and her husband, residents of Gurugram and involved in a leather accessories business, also sustained injuries. Investigators are verifying whether she had a valid driving licence. Her blood samples have been sent for alcohol testing, and CCTV footage from the area is being scrutinized to reconstruct the sequence of events.
