NEW DELHI: A video purportedly showing Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) councillor from Kondli, Munesh Dedha, scolding a couple for sitting in a park in east Delhi in the evening has surfaced on social media, triggering sharp reactions.In one part of the video, which she posted on social media, the BJP councillor accosted a young couple and reprimanded them for sitting in an objectionable manner in the park. She also asked the man in the video to call his parents and threatened the duo with police detention. The faces of the couple are visible in the video.
The video, shared by the councillor on her social media platforms, shows her accompanied by two to three men in a park at around 8.30 pm on Wednesday. She is later joined by the woman who said her daughter had gone missing.In another part of the video, Dedha was seen asking a group of people, including two young girls, why they were in the park in the evening. A man accompanying the councillor searched the men and found a tube of what he alleged was sniffing glue. The mother of one of the girls accompanied Dedha. The councillor grabbed a man by the collar, threatening to hand them over to the police. She also spoke to the man’s father, who said he should be handed over to the police.Speaking to TOI, Dedha said she visited the park following complaints from residents of a neighbouring colony, who alleged that the park had “turned into a hotspot for anti-social activities”, especially after sunset. She also claimed that parents from nearby Dallupura had approached her alleging that their minor daughters had gone missing and were consuming drugs.“I received complaints about three girls missing from Dallupura. When I visited the park, I found them sitting near a bonfire and allegedly consuming prohibited substances. I warned them that I would hand them over to the police,” Dedha said.She added that the visit was also intended to inspect lighting arrangements. “While inspecting the area, I also found a couple, both claiming to be 18, sitting in an objectionable position. They said their parents were aware. I spoke to a man who claimed to be their uncle, but I could not verify his identity. They also failed to show ID cards,” she said.Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha president, Richa Pandey Mishra, said that as an elected representative, the councillor acted to prevent youngsters from being drawn into drug abuse. However, she conceded that police assistance should have been sought before taking action.“She was conducting a night inspection of a park in her ward. During this inspection, she found some minor Hindu girls and Muslim boys (both adult and minor) consuming drugs. While her intent may have been to protect minors, such actions should be carried out in coordination with the local police, with both male and female personnel present,” she said.
