Day after Ghatkopar accident in Mumbai, drunk driver & her two friends arrested; victim still critical

Mumbai: A day after a roadside dweller was left critically injured after a speeding SUV jumped onto the footpath and hit him, Ghatkopar police arrested the driver Bhavika Dama (30) and her friends Koram Bhanusali (30) and Aniket Bhansode.As the medical test confirmed that Dama, who sustained injuries to her hand, was driving under the influence of alcohol, police have added charges of drunk driving and culpable homicide. The unidentified victim, still unconscious, is being treated at Rajawadi Hospital’s ICU for head injuries and a fractured leg.The accident took place around 6.15am on Saturday in front of Excel Arcade building on LBS Road, barely 200m from Ghatkopar police station. CCTV footage showed Dama and Bhanushali helping Bhansode escape in an autorickshaw before women residents of the building caught them and handed them over to police. Police registered a suo motu case of rash and negligent driving against Dama, and booked Bhanusali and Bhansode for travelling with a drunk driver and failing to help the injured pedestrian. They were released after being served a noticeThey were arrested on Sunday after Dama’s medical test report confirmed that she was driving drunk. They were produced before a holiday court, which remanded them to two-day police custody.The trio has admitted to having partied at Dama’s Ghatkopar East residence the previous night before heading to Kurla for breakfast. Police have asked the RTO to inspect the SUV to determine its speed at the time of the crash.
