Pune: A 30-year-old software engineer from Hinjewadi was allegedly duped of Rs 34 lakh by cybercrooks who promised him 40% returns on cryptocurrency investments.According to police, the fraud took place in Oct this year. The victim lodged a complaint with the Hinjewadi police on Saturday.An officer from the Hinjewadi police said the victim received a call from an unknown cellphone number on Oct 18. The caller claimed to represent a firm offering 40% on cryptocurrency investments.“The victim initially transferred small amounts to the bank account numbers provided to him. The crooks transferred his profit amount to him immediately and gained his confidence. The victim then went on investing amounts as and when the crooks demanded. Till Oct 30, he transferred Rs 34 lakh to the bank account numbers provided to him,” the officer said.The victim grew suspicious when the fraudsters continued to demand more money but failed to return either the promised profits or the invested amount. He then approached the Pimpri Chinchwad cyber police and filed a complaint.“Following preliminary inquiries, a case has been registered, and further investigation is underway,” the officer said.
