New Delhi: A clash broke out on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus during a general body meeting at the School of Social Sciences on Wednesday night. Left student groups and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad accused each other for the violence. A meeting was being held to elect a school representative to the election committee (EC) for the coming JNUSU polls when the alleged clash broke out. According to AISA, ABVP members disrupted the proceedings, heckled councillors presenting their reports, and assaulted several students, including a woman student. AISA alleged the woman was “grabbed by the throat”. The group claimed that some of the injured students were taken to Safdarjung Hospital. “ABVP’s hooliganism is an attempt to derail the democratic election process,” AISA said in a statement. ABVP accused a Left councillor of making “discriminatory remarks” against students from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. It said that its members were attacked when they objected to the remarks. The group called the incident “a direct attack on JNU‘s democratic and intellectual traditions”. Photos shared by students showed several people with injuries. There was no response from the university.
